New from the Swedish manufacturer, the Lynx 5mm semi-dry suit is cut to accommodate your shape, with contoured arms and legs and stretchy panels where they're needed. It even does a version for women that leaves you, well, looking like women! Thick cuffs with zips protect seals at wrist and ankles, and there is even a comfort zip at the throat to make small boat rides more palatable. It costs £169. If you think you may not be warm enough, there is also the matching Libra Over-Vest (£69.50) with attached hood (£87) or a separate Hydra 5/7mm hood (£24) to go with it.

Ordinary wooden pencils used for diving get waterlogged and swell up after a time, causing the lead to drop out. ScubaPencils, however, are made from recycled polystyrene cups, so you will always have lead in your pencil. Popular with instructors, now photographers, underwater archaeologists, technical and cave divers in the USA have apparently caught on to this practical yet simple idea. The pencils cost £2 for four.

Retired cop Reg Pengelly has dealt with some slippery customers in his time, but diving suits were never among them. He has come up with a simple formula for a lubricant that he claims will help you slip through those awkward narrow places such as tight wrist and neck seals. He says it leaves no sticky residue and dispenses with clouds of talcum powder or awkward moments in the chemist's shop asking for suitable lubricating gels. A 250ml bottle costs £5 and is available in a few dive stores or by mail order.

The availability of digital cameras means that more and more people are taking up underwater photography. Keeping hold of your precious kit can be a problem at times, so a reliable method of keeping it secure becomes important. This camera-tether attaches using a standard screw that fits the tripod socket of any underwater housing. Its stretchy fabric-covered coil extends to 1m and is equipped with a piston-clip at the other end. Price £25.

It turned up too late for this month's comparison test; sharp as a sabre but thankfully shorter, this is not the sort of knife with which to be caught roaming the streets. Its 12cm blade has slicing and saw edges, a sharp point, and a line-cutter too. It has an end for hammering, and the anatomically shaped handle gives a firm grip. It is stowed in a quick-release sheath that straps conveniently in place, and is the sort of thing that can get you into or out of a lot of trouble - depending on where you are. £30

A mouthpiece that you can customise to fit your bite exactly - that's the claim of Seacure. You simply trim it to length, then soak it in hot water until it becomes pliable before slipping it into your mouth and biting down on it. Should your dentist alter your dental array, you can reshape it later. The Seacure has been available from the USA for years, but now it has a UK importer.
