WHATS BUBBLING  The latest gadgets, gear and places to go...

RNLI 2004 Available through the Christmas Watermark mail-order catalogue or on-line, this RNLI calendar features 13 colourful underwater photographs by Tony White. The Hidden World Calendar costs £5.75 plus p&p. Every home should have one.

  • A VIEW TO A DIVE Want to dive in Mallorca next summer? Well, the dive centre based at the south-west tip of the island, facing Isla Dragonera, has a new multi-language website that reflects the international spirit of its dive crew. Mallorca is justifiably popular with European holiday-makers and attractive under the water too. Scuba-Activa is conveniently based at Sant Elm, near Port Andraitx, and offers all you need if you're in that part of the island and want to go diving.

  • SLOW BURN The Teknolite underwater torch has four high-output LEDs that will burn for 150 hours with one set of three AA batteries. The LEDs are said to be almost everlasting, and cutting-edge Swiss technology glow-in-the-dark locator lights make it easy to find and are guaranteed to glow for 10 years. Strongly made and said to be watertight to 150m deep, it could make a good diver's back-up light. The price includes batteries and lanyard. Around £40 from H3 (UK).

  • EVERY BOAT SHOULD HAVE ONE This Dive O2 diver-therapy O2 kit comes with a demand-valve and regulator to supply 10 or 15 litres per minute therapy outlet flows. The demand valves have a positive-pressure trigger-operated option too. To avoid over-inflation of a casualty's lungs the demand-valve is fitted with an over-pressure relief valve that vents off excess gas. In this way it can be safely used by those with minimal training. Two sizes of on-demand mask, and a constant-flow therapy mask for non-breathing casualties, are included in either a hard case or soft bag. It's expected to cost between £530 and £620.

  • TRIMIX CHECK The US-made Mixchek analyses the oxygen and helium concentrations in a gas mixture using a dedicated two-channel sensor network sharing a common sample system, and the percentages are read directly on two large LCD displays. This portable version is powered by four C-cell batteries, and although the instrument is not watertight, it is supplied in a strong water-resistant case. A hose and connection to a tank's DIN valve is part of the kit. Normally £940 each, there is an introductory offer of £1292 for two.

  • DREAMS COME TRUE Trying to decide where to go for a diving holiday? Activity holiday experts Neilson and Regal can help. The brochures for next year's diving holiday packages are out and ready for you to drool over. Neilson includes destinations as varied as ice-diving in the Zell am Zee in Austria, liveaboard diving gulets in Turkey, and a new early-booking offer for the Maldives. There are even more options for the single traveller to enjoy a supplement-free holiday. Regal offers a huge range of liveaboards in the ever-popular Red Sea, its No 1 field of operations, and a wealth of other diving destinations.

  • PHOTO DEAL Digital photography offers instant results but if you want a high-quality print from one of the pictures you have on file, you usually need to get down to a high street outlet. The Digital Camera Company now provides a digital software solution, enabling you to order your prints on-line and have them delivered to your home within five working days. Its introductory offer provides the first five prints free.

  • SUDAN SCOT Scottish skipper Rosie Frampton has been so successful with her diving operation aboard her trawler-yacht my Connda Vennessa, based out of Port Sudan, that she has decided to offer seven additional charters between February and April next year. Wingate Reef, Sanganeb, Sha'ab Rumi and points north are all on the menu of Red Sea offerings of either seven or 14 nights' duration. The well-equipped vessel has luxurious accommodation for up to 10 divers and a high-speed RIB. Prices start from £1295.

  • COMPUTER SAVVY We would say that Cochran computers are designed for those with computer-savvy. Each now comes with a user-tutorial on PC disc. Endlessly adjustable to suit your own criteria, with complex downloads of dive profiles, the basic Commander is a wrist-mounted unit attractive to technophiles. Nitrox-compatible, and up to two-mix/two-PO2 when you need it, the built-in intelligence is said to manage everything, automatically adapting to your diving style, water temperature, salt/fresh water, ascent rates and altitude. A "Flight Data Recorder" even records changes in altitude during your flight to and from your destination. From £269, but ring Cochran's new British representative to find out about participating dealers with special offers.

  • NEW DAHAB DIVE-CENTRE Dahab is home to two of the world's most famous dive sites, the Canyon and the Blue Hole, but there is plenty more to see on untouched coral reefs nearby. Dahab has escaped a lot of the commercial development that has affected other Egyptian resorts and is relatively uncrowded. So says Club Vass Active Holidays, which opens the Club Dahab Dive Centre this November.

  • IN THE PINK The New Fourth Element brochure is out and includes some new T-shirts and sweatshirts. The popular Pressure Seeker T-shirt has been re-released on a new hard-wearing heavyweight material and there are new colours in mini-diver and Ocean-style garments. Fourth Element camisole vests are now available in pink and aqua.

  • CLEAN AIR Concerned that the air you breathe when diving may not be as clean as it should be? The Apollo Biofilter sits between the first and second stages of your regulator and has both an activated carbon filter and an electrostatic dust-catcher. These contrive to remove any impurities and taste from your air supply. Not only that, but a moisture pad puts back water vapour into the air you breathe so that you don't suffer that dry-throat syndrome that can occur in warmer climates. Apollo says it equates to the function of one's nose when breathing normally on land. The Apollo Biofilter costs £94.95.

  • SHE'LL BE 'RIGHT Fancy some PNG diving? Operating out of Madang in the north and under the command of its laconic owners Tony Collins and brother James, the new-to-the-job diving-charter vessel mv Moonlighting 2 accommodates 12 guests. That's twice as many passengers as its former sister mv Moonlighting (see Diver, April). The Aussie-sounding brothers were born in the highlands of PNG and are direct descendants of the first European settlers. The atmosphere on board is relaxed and the diving fun. We think the average Brit will love it! And with tons of WW2 wrecks, unexplored reefs, and muck diving, Tony promises "more macro than you can shake a stick at and all the pelagic action you can handle".
