DON'T BE LEFT IN THE DARK
NIGEL EATON, EDITOR
HERE AT DIVER, OUR GUIDELINES FOR EVERYONE who writes for the magazine are similar. Whether it's testing dive gear, reporting on a wreck site, doing a dive training course, or sampling a holiday destination or dive liveaboard, the brief is simple: do the diving, come back and report what you've seen, and if it's fair and legal (and, of course, interesting and authoritative) we'll print it.
This month our contributors have excelled themselves - bringing illumination and clarity to a wide and fascinating range of diving places and diving subjects.
In his report on out-of-the-way dive sites in Scotland, John Liddiard combines a club expedition to two different bits of the coastline with trying out a popular diving RIB equipped with the latest in marine electronics. Would the dive sites be worth the extra effort? Would the boat and equipment be up to the job? See what John discovered.
Meanwhile, in warmer waters, Mike Ward boards the Coral Queen to give the latest picture of diving in the southern Egyptian Red Sea with a crew who really know their way around the best sites.
And John Bantin flies to the Far East and tells us exactly what he finds - and what he doesn't quite manage to find - at the marine-life-rich island of Loloata, Papua New Guinea.
Turning north, Leigh Bishop describes the recent expedition to dive the wreck of the Nazi liner Wilhelm Gustloff, which became the world's worst sea disaster when she was torpedoed in the Baltic in 1945 with the loss of no fewer than 7700 lives. It's challenging - and chilling - diving, in more ways than one.
Then, just about as far south as you can get, this month's special Antarctic supplement gives an expert view of the lonely continent from four different divers, plus advice on choosing the right equipment and clothing, travel guidelines - and some stunning pictures. It's another world - but one that is not beyond the reach of divers looking for the ultimate in exclusive destinations.
Finally, to help you get the clearest possible view of the underwater world, this issue's Diver Tests survey takes a close look at a selection of 38 diving torches which won't break the bank but should get you home
As ever, we look at the facts - and tell it as it is.
