THE DEEP BREATH TESTS

Ocean Reef 6600
Piston first-stage with four mp and two hp ports. Plastic second-stage with venturi +/- and BRA.
First impressions:
An old-fashioned-looking tall turret first-stage with the mp ports arranged in pairs too close together for hoses with protectors. We thought e quality of the machining of the ports to be suspect. The second-stage looked rather flimsy, with a tiny purge button.

At depth:
George: "A poor mouthpiece proved difficult to get a good grip on. The BRA knob worked, but could cause a free-flow rather easily - and that's the last thing you want to fiddle about with at depth."
Sarah: "It was an OK breather but with a sloppy mouthpiece. The purge button seemed less than ideal for beginners."
Steffi: "It breathed well. On panicky breathing patterns and face up it performed well. The mouthpiece was a complete waste of time. It was not comfortable at all."
Steve: "I continually had to adjust it according to my depth on descent to avoid it free-flowing. It was an OK breathe but it did rasp a bit."

Upside-down: Wet - but just OK.
In a fast current: Good.

What the machine found:
This regulator failed to give an adequate performance anywhere near 50m.
Work of breathing at 39m: 2.39 joules/litre.

Diaphragm first-stage with four mp and two hp ports. Plastic second-stage with BRA.
First impressions:
We liked the squat turret with its clean lines, but not the poor-quality chroming. We questioned the design of the second-stage and the quality of construction. It seemed bulky, with too many nooks and crannies to attract crud. There appeared to be machine screws of mixed metal used, which would lead to deterioration through electrolysis. It gives the impression that it is not meant to last.

At depth:
George: "It was fairly comfortable in the mouth. The BRA knob was adjustable to the point of free-flow."
Sarah: "Not bad. An enormous second-stage with a huge mouthpiece. It was a bit like being at the dentist. The BRA was adjustable to the point of free-flow. Too much."
Steffi: "I found it gave very close to normal surface air breathing."
Steve: "A nice cool breathe. I felt the cooling effect of lots of air but under control. It was my favourite of the day and I was impressed by it."

Upside-down: Slightly wet but improved with further inhalations.
In a fast current: Average to good when BRA screwed right down.

What the machine found:
An exceptionally high performance with little inhalation resistance as deep as 56m. Exhalation effort exceeded inhalation!
Work of breathing at 50m: 1.33 joules/litre.
