21 REGULATORS

THE DEEP BREATH TESTS

Oceanic Delta II D
Diaphragm first-stage with four mp and two hp ports. Plastic second-stage with BRA.
First impressions:
This regulator looks very modern, with good positions for the ports on the environmentally sealed first-stage, good supple hose protectors and a second-stage with a nicely integrated design.

At depth:
George: "A good dry breather. I liked the mouthpiece. However I felt the purge was too powerful."
Sarah: "A good breather with a vicious purge. It free-flowed at the maximum setting of the BRA. This knob could not be over-tightened but that meant you didn't know when it was fully closed. It whistled a bit."
Steffi: "A wet breathe. It was slight but it made me cough. It was such a fine mist I didn't notice it until some amount of water had collected in my mouth. The delivery of air was great, with no resistance even on panic breathing. The knob works well too, but you seem to be able to turn it right down so that you can stop the air flow - not a good idea at 40m!"
Steve: "The air seemed to come with a real rush with the BRA turned up. It was smooth and even but it made me cough at times. It was OK face up, too."

Upside-down: Kept a fine spray of water.
In a fast current: Very good.

What the machine found:
A very acceptable and smooth performance at 50m, with virtually no extra effort needed to initiate the air supply.
Work of breathing at 50m: 1.89 joules/litre.

Guide price: £214
Oceanic Delta II D

Oceanic Delta II D

Oceanic Gamma D
Diaphragm first-stage with four mp and two hp ports. Plastic second-stage.
First impressions:
The Gamma has an identical-looking first-stage to the Delta. We thought the second-stage over-designed but unfortunately not over-engineered. The purge button was inclined to stick in.

At depth:
George: "A simple assuring breathe at all rates of inhalation. Very comfortable in the mouth."
Sarah: "Sad in comparison to some others. I felt a little air-starved at times. The purge button felt quite easy to get at."
Steffi: "A very easy breathe."
Steve: " It was nice and even. The lightweight second-stage seemed comfortable in the mouth."

Upside-down: Slightly wet but improved with further inhalations.
In a fast current: Good.

What the machine found:
Acceptable, but an inferior performer to the Oceanic Delta D.
Work of breathing at 50m: 2.22 joules/litre.

Guide price: £202
