ADOPT A WRECK
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Nautical Archaeology Society have announced a new joint scheme called Adopt a Wreck. It is intended to help divers develop a sense of purpose in the survey and preservation of wrecks.
Within a formalised structure, and using skills developed as a result of training with the NAS, club divers will be encouraged to carry out regular monitoring of a chosen site. The scheme has been piloted by a group of divers who, for 15 years, have tended the wreck of the Halsewell, an East Indiaman sunk off Dorset in 1786. Taking on the Adopt a Wreck scheme led to recognised benefits in the conduct of their programme.
