Bristol club gets over £100,000 in development aid
A Bristol diving club has received a National Lottery grant of £106,000 to construct a new clubhouse in the city's docks and equip itself with a new RIB, compressor and ten full sets of training gear. Severnside Sub-Aqua Club, a BSAC branch, has obtained the sum - thought to be a record sport diving grant - on the basis that it gives special encouragement to young people in learning to dive, and to disabled trainees.
The National Lottery Board was also impressed by the fact that club members put in an enormous effort in terms of their own time and professional skills to help convert a historic but derelict docks stable block - dating to when horse-drawn wagons carried loads to and from docked ships - into the new clubhouse. "The project has been valued at £150,000 and, if you take into account the skills and services of members provided free, the real value of what we have created probably totals some £200,000," says Tony Reed, Project Co-ordinator.
