Shore dive tragedy

Diver dies after tangling in line
A shore dive by two men off Babbacombe Beach in Devon ended in tragedy when one of the divers drowned after getting tangled in fishing pot lines.
Kevin Holvey, 39, an electrical engineer, and Troy Elliott, 28, a police constable, both from Ebbw Vale in Gwent, had finned out over the gradually shelving seabed in good conditions to a depth of just 7.5m when, according to Coastguard and coroner's information, silt was kicked up and Holvey - perhaps startled from running into a pot line - attempted a rapid ascent and became entangled.
The full facts will not become clear until the inquest, but it is understood that, when Elliott located his buddy in the badly reduced visibility, he found Holvey without a regulator in his mouth. Elliott is reported to have tried to replace the regulator without success before surfacing and waving for help, which was spotted.
Elliott then dived again and had to remove Holvey's gear to get him to the surface. He was towing Holvey towards the shore when a Coastguard rescue team arrived. Brought ashore in a "very poor way", Holvey, who was married with a son, died later in Torbay hospital. A post mortem deduced death by drowning. Elliott was also hospitalised and treated for shock before being released.
