EATON HONOURED

Diver publisher sits at high table
Diver's Editor-in-Chief, Bernard Eaton, has been honoured by the newly formed International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame. Marking his election as one of 19 people from around the globe who have made a contribution to the development and/or promotion of recreational scuba diving, his citation reads: "Over the years, Eaton's efforts in the field have kept enthusiasts informed and inspired." Among the other 18 chosen for the Hall of Fame accolade are Jacques-Yves Cousteau; Emile Gagnan; Hans and Lotte Hass; Ron and Valerie Taylor; Sylvia Earle; Stanton Waterman; Al Giddings; Jack McKenney; and Lloyd Bridges. During his 39 years as publisher of Diver, formerly Triton, Bernard Eaton has organised 10 international and national underwater conferences and film festivals; organised 21 dive shows; been involved at top level with two world underwater congresses; launched Underwater Conservation Year with David Bellamy; was the founder chairman of the Marine Conservation Society, of which he remains a vice-president; and is a patron of the Shark Trust. Awards he has received in the past include three from the British Sub-Aqua Club for his acclaimed editorship of the club's magazine, the last presentation being made at the BSAC's 40th anniversary celebrations at Guildhall, London, in 1993. The inaugural induction and gala celebration of members of the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame will be conducted in the Cayman Islands in September.
