JUTLAND FINDS
Deep-diving technical divers have reported their discovery of HMS Indefatigable and HMS Defence, sunk during the Battle of Jutland in 1916.
HMS Indefatigable, sunk while fighting as one of three ships in Admiral Beatty's line, was located and dived in mid-May by Deep Blue Expeditions and the Starfish Enterprise diving team.
Innes McCartney, of Deep Blue Expeditions, said the team had located "the last unfound British battle cruiser wreck in the world" - although he also stated that the wreck had been "subject to heavy commercial salvage in the past".
The team had not interfered with the "heavily dispersed" wreck, due to its status as a war grave, said McCartney. All but two of the ship's 1019 crew died in the sinking.
Deep Blue followed this up with the discovery of HMS Defence, an armoured cruiser which served as Sir Robert Arbuthnot's First Cruiser Squadron flagship. She was sunk with all 903 of her crew. The divers have found her "largely intact".
