DIVER FINDS NAZI ARTEFACT IN AUSTRIAN LAKE
The personal seal of Nazi security chief Ernst Kaltenbrunner was discovered by a Dutch diver in Altausee Lake, Austria. The diver was on holiday and came across the brass disc on a recreational dive in the Alpine lake.
Kaltenbrunner was Head of the SS Security Police. He was convicted of crimes against humanity at the Nurembury trials and hanged in October 1946. Historians at Vienna University believe he threw the seal into the lake while he was on the run in May 1945, in an attempt to avoid identification.
The discovery has caused a stir of interest from local people, who believe that the Nazis disposed of other valuables in Austrian lakes.
