RARE LOBSTER CAPTURED IN SCILLY ISLES
The National Marine Aquarium at Plymouth has become home to a rare slipper lobster. The creature was captured by a diver in the Scilly Isles at a depth of 60m and handed in to the Harbour Master.
Diver Barry Bennett realised that the lively 12cm long lobster was a highly unusual find in UK waters and put her on display in a tank in the Harbourmaster's Office in St Mary's. She was later transported to the national Marine Aquarium where the marine biologists confirmed that she was a female slipper lobster Scyllarus arctus.
Only 13 such lobsters have been found in UK waters since 1758, all around Plymouth, Cornwall and the Scilly Isles.
