PENGUINS IN PERIL
Colonies of penguins in the McMurdo Sound have been stranded far from their breeding grounds. Giant icebergs which have been approaching the Antarctic Sound since March 2001 have now blocked their sea route.
The penguins would usually swim to their breeding grounds, and can travel at 5 miles per hour underwater. Now faced with a long trek over the ice, the penguins, who can only walk at a speed of one mile per hour are unlikely to be able to make the distance in time. The distance between the breeding grounds and the food source for the penguins is now too large to be manageable.
The relatively rare Adelie penguin is expected to be particularly hard hit.
