BSAC OKAYS REBREATHER FOR CLUB DIVES
The BSAC has accepted the use of closed-circuit rebreathers on club dives, where previously only semi-closed units had been sanctioned by the club.
The ruling effectively concerns the main unit used by British divers, AP Valves' Buddy Inspiration. Martin Parker, Managing Director of AP Valves, told Diver: "Obviously I am delighted by the decision of the BSAC to sanction the Inspiration. Of course, from my point of view, it was about time too!"
Much debate has centred on the rebreather, which has featured in a high number of diving fatalities since its introduction in late 1997. But investigations, in cases where CCR units have been recovered, have revealed that user-error rather than equipment failure has been responsible for the accidents.
