FREEDIVE RECORD
A diver working in Egypt claims to have set a new world record of 150.7m for a mixed-gas dive by a woman.
Jayne Mayer, who works as a TDI training director at Divers Lodge in Hurghada, made the dive at the end of August. She was supported by two other centre staff, Dr Ahmed Kamal and Peter Pedrov.
Mayer dived at Small Giftun Canyon, a wall dive. Afterwards the team reported no clinical problems with decompression illness, HPNS (a nervous disorder associated with rapid descents) or other matters.
Profiles were calculated using ABYSS software, and the bottom depth recorded by two computers - Diverite models Nitek 3 and Nitek C.
Mayer has stated her intention to go deeper, right to the bottom of the canyon. The dive is expected to be in the 180m to 200m range.
