RNLI MAKES WAVES
The RNLI has opened a new website and says its aim is not simply to run through well-established alert and response procedures but to invite "constructive debate on sea-safety issues".
Waves, run as an adjunct to the RNLI's main website, will explore issues of concern to all sea-users, from divers, sailors and anglers to commercial fleets.
For its launch, the site has initiated debates on diving, motorboating and beach safety, looking at how people go about their chosen activity, where problems can develop and how potentially dangerous situations can be avoided.
"Waves will allow water-users, manufacturers and the media to view all the arguments together in one place," said Peter Bradley, RNLI Sea Safety Manager. "We hope the issues raised will improve the standard of debate on water safety issues." You can access Waves via www.lifeboats.org.uk
Meanwhile an RNLI video, Deep Trouble, has been produced to concentrate divers' minds on typical scenarios that can lead to incidents. It was made under the direction of Martin Woodward, a commercial diver and salvor and coxswain of the Bembridge lifeboat on the Isle of Wight. It is available to any diving club on request from RNLI, West Quay Road, Poole BH15 1HZ (tel: 01202 663000).
