SERVICES' SABAH SURVEY
A Joint Services diving group is to explore waters off Sabah in north Borneo, Malaysia.
During July and August a 16-man team, led by Cpl Paul Brazier of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, will compare marine life on undived wrecks and a clutch of heavily dived "tourist wrecks" for the Sabah authorities and Britain's University of Southampton; collect sediment samples for the Natural History Museum; and collect data on the build-up of microbubbles in the bloodstream for Divers Alert Network.
Technical challenges will include introducing technical diving and gas-blending to Mantanani island, previously a base only for non-decompression air diving. Preparations for the diving team have included training as BSAC Nitrox and Extended Range Divers.
