TRIDENT WRECK INVESTIGATION REOPENED
Divers who discovered the lost wreck of the fishing trawler Trident were delighted to hear the announcement from Transport Secretary Stephen Byers that the formal investigation into the loss of the vessel is being reopened.
The vessel was found and identified, lying in 60m in the North Sea, south of Wick. The crew of seven had perished with the boat, which sank in 1974, without trace, and in mysterious circumstances. "I'm so pleased for the families," commented Mark Brill, one of the divers who found the wreck in June 2001. "This is a great result."
The discovery of the vessel allowed the Marine Accident Investigation Board to carry out an ROV survey. Significant new evidence was uncovered that justified the reopening of the enquiry.
Families of the Trident crew had been campaigning for the investigation to be reopened. See previous news story.
