Shark Trust moves
New Plymouth base for shark campaigners
The Shark Trust, Britain's small but driven shark conservation organisation, is to move from Newbury to Plymouth, where it will take an office - possibly at the National Marine Aquarium or Marine Biological Association.
A full-time director, Clive James, has been appointed. Sarah Fowler, who established the trust as a part-time director, returns to Nature Conservation but remains a trustee.
James, who has a business and marketing background, told Diver: "We've established a reputation for working in partnership with various organisations whose interests overlap with our own. By moving to Plymouth, which is a main centre for marine biological work, we'll be that much closer to the hub of research activities - especially those on the basking shark."
This year, he said, the trust would continue its campaign for Europe-wide protection legislation for the basking shark, and work on a new basking shark fin-identification project.
It will collaborate with research groups worldwide and with the National Marine Aquarium to stage exhibitions, and work more with schools, he said. Call the Shark Trust on 01752 672008 or visit its website, www.sharktrust.org
