Rebreather expert dies

Texan Rob Davie, a rebreather diver and instructor who played a key role in running the popular Rebreather World website forum, has died while on a liveaboard diving holiday in southern Egypt.

"All I know so far is that he made two dives in the morning and evidently had problems with his gear - they think taking on water in a deep dive," Davie's widow, Sheryl, told Rebreather World readers soon after the accident in late April.

"We know he released his weightbelt and ascended very rapidly. I was told [that] ten minutes after the divers went down, the boat crew found him floating face down."

She added: "Rob died doing what he loved."

A member of the diving group has told Rebreather World that Davie was seen to switch to his open-circuit bail-out system at a depth of around 20-24m and ascend.

Davie, who worked as a pilot with Continental Airlines, was seen to surface and start swimming towards the cover boat before he lost consciousness.

The correspondent added that, after a previous dive, Davie had mentioned having a problem with his mouthpiece, but that he had solved it.
