IMAX film gets up close to marine life

A new underwater IMAX film, Deep Sea 3D, has opened in London.

Filmed around the world, the film succeeds in getting an audience to believe that host of creatures, including barracuda, turtles, jellyfish, wolf eels, sand tiger sharks, octopus and squid, are about to swim into their midst.

At macro level it gets up close to featherstars, nudibranchs, tube anemones, crabs, shrimps and spawning coral reefs.

"Even with a large number of people who do scuba dive, lots of them have never met these characters or seen how they interact with other animals," said Toni Myers, who produced the film with Michelle Hall. "Deep Sea 3D includes moments that Howard (director Howard Hall) has never filmed before, even in his long and varied career in undersea photography."

The film demonstrates the inter-reliance of marine creatures - and how things can break down when arrangements get out of balance. The narration, by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, is pitched to satisfy both adults and children.

Deep Sea 3D opens on 3 March at the British Film Institute's London IMAX Cinema at Waterloo, and at the Science Museum IMAX Cinema.

It is the second underwater IMAX film released in Britain within a few weeks. Sharks 3D is running at a number of IMAX cinemas around the country (see link).
