Sainsbury's moves on endangered fish
Sainsbury's is to stop selling endangered fish such as skate and huss. The supermarket, the UK's largest fishmonger and winner of Seafood Retailer of the Year for the past two years, made the announcement last week.
As of now, Sainsbury's will stop selling skate, which it says is worth £650,000 to the company per year. Huss, another endangered species, will also be taken off the shelves. Sainsbury's says these two species are only the first to undergo a new assessment system to determine sustainability, and any species shown to be critically endangered will be phased out.
The move was praised by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), which is working with the retailer to source sustainable fish stocks.
Bernadette Clarke, MCS Fisheries Officer, said: "The Marine Conservation Society is very encouraged by Sainsbury's decision to remove highly vulnerable species such as skate and huss from its counters, and by its plans to phase out the sale of its remaining fish from unsustainable sources."
