Search for missing diver called off
Northumbria Police has said it will not be ordering searches for a diver who disappeared on 5 June while carrying out a deep dive off the North East coast.
The diver has been named as Nicholas Jackson, 25, from Newcastle. He is now classified as missing, presumed dead.
Inspector John Watts, of Northumbria Police Marine Unit, told Divernet that five “regular technical divers” searched the wreck area on 6 June from the charter boat Spellbinder II, but found no trace of Jackson. He added that, from the police’s standpoint, no further searches would be ordered.
It has emerged that the fatal 57m dive, which involved four rebreather divers, was a very long one involving an hour of bottom time. Inspector Watts said the last diver out of the water had a total dive time of 3 hours, 42 minutes.
Inspector Watts confirmed that the divers raised three portholes from the wreck, and Jackson is known to have removed one of the pieces and sent it to the surface, before he got into difficulties.
