Divers escape netting
Two divers had a close escape when they became entangled in nets off the Dorset coast.
The pair were diving recently in about 27m of water at Swyre Ledges, a couple of miles off West Bexington. They swam into monofilament netting caught up on the reef. Monofilament is notoriously difficult to see under water.
According to a report in the Dorset Echo, the divers had to cut their way out, and abandon some pieces of gear in order to escape.
Swyre Ledges is a popular dive site. One of the divers voiced concern that there were no buoys to mark the presence of nets, and that if a fisherman was intentionally netting there it represented a dangerous development for divers.
He acknowledged, however, that it was possible that the nets had snagged accidentally on the reef and been lost by the fishing boat involved.
