Extended protection for Cornish wreck
The wreck of the St Anthony, near Helston in South Cornwall, has been redesignated so that a bigger protected area will be out of bounds to divers.
The Portuguese merchantman was sunk by a storm in 1527 off Gunwalloe Fishing Cove, while carrying a cargo of copper and silver ingots.
The wreck was found in 1981 and, a year later, designated as a protected site under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973. There is no current licensee for the site and no artefacts have been raised from the wreck.
Culture Minister David Lammy announced the redesignation on 22 September. The move came in response to a 2005 report to the DCMS, concluding that objects of archaeological interest lay outside the area designated in 1981.
The centre of the restricted area around the site has been moved south-east of its old position and increased to a radius of 150m. Coordinates for the centre have yet to be released, but will be posted online by the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI).
