Divers held after liveaboard strays into Indonesian waters
15 divers, together with the guides
and crew aboard Singapore-based liveaboard MV White Manta, have
been detained for six days by the Indonesian authorities after straying into Indonesian waters.
White Manta was heading for the 'Seven Skies' wreck off the
eastern coast of Johor, Malaysia on 8 October when she was intercepted by an Indonesian
Naval vessel. All 32 people on board were taken to the island of Bintan
for "immigration purposes" after claims that the vessel had strayed into
Indonesian waters.
The passengers on board are New Zealand, US,
French, German, Swiss, and Malaysian nationals. Most of the crew are
Indonesian nationals.
The detention came to light after
enquiries were made by the New Zealand department of Foreign Affairs,
following up reports that New Zealand citizens had 'disappeared' six days ago.
A
statement from the Indonesian Navy indicated that the vessel along with
the passengers and crew would be released shortly and allowed to
return to Singapore.
