170m free dive is homage to Audrey Mestre
Pipin Ferreras completed a 170m 'No Limits' free dive in Mexico on the anniversary of the tragic death
of his wife Audrey Mestre.
The 170m dive took place at 11.30am on 12 October at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico exactly a year after the accident
which claimed Mestre's life, and involved several of the same team members.
Ferreras spent 2 minutes 39 seconds underwater, plunging to 170m (558 feet) on a sled, and
inflating a balloon at the bottom to return to the surface. The dive was filmed by manned
submersibles for director James Cameron, who plans to make a film of Audrey's life.
The depth was recorded using an Ocean Sensors precision depth gauge which Ferrera wore on his back.
The filming was hampered by poor visibility at depth, while the first 30m (100 feet) of the dive
had excellent visibility, this dropped to barely 3m (8 feet) at the bottom. The location had been
chosen because it was where Audrey and Pipin first met in 1996.
The dive is recognised as a world record by Pipin's own organisation the
International Association of Freedivers,
but is not recognised by AIDA, the governing body for competitive freediving.
