Diver finds Bronze Age axe in Poole harbour
Archaeologists believe the roughly hewn lump of metal retrieved from Poole harbour by diver Phil Butterworth is
the head of a 3,000-year-old axe.
The find has been handed over to scientists at Bournemouth University to determine the exact age. If tests confirm that
the artefact dates back to 1000 B.C., the diver has agreed to donate the axe head to Poole Museum.
The Receiver of Wreck has also received a droit detailing the find.
Poole is a well known historic settlement,
and divers often visit a site known as 'the fossilised forest' in Poole bay as a second dive. The site is
tangible evidence of previous inhabited lands which have now been covered by rising sea levels.
