Beluga whales held captive in Sharm heat
Marine Connection is asking divers to intervene on behalf of two beluga whales being held captive in cramped, overheated conditions at a tourist attraction in the popular diving destination of Sharm
The beluga whales are believed to have been imported from Russia, and are being kept in a tiny holding pool in water of 25 °C. Belugas normally live in the polar regions in temperatures of 1-2 °C.
The whales are being held at 'Dolphinella', a tourist attraction at El Hadaba, Sharm, which also runs a controversial 'swim with dolphins' programme. Concerns have been raised that the Egyptian authorities are not making sure that the arrangements for the welfare of these captive animals are adequate and humane.
