Italian freediver claims new world breath-holding record
Giancarlo Bellingrath of Naples, Italy claimed a new world record for static apnea after successfully holding his breath underwater for 12 minutes and 47 seconds.
31-year-old Bellingrath beat the previous record, held by Gianluca Genoni by an extra 13 seconds. The record breaking feat took place at Scandone swimming pool in Naples. Bellingrath specialises in freediving endurance records and has held his breath underwater for an hour, taking only 80 breaths in a total time of under 15 seconds.
"It should be added that his record was only achieved by pre-breathing 100% oxygen and is therefore not that significant - and in fact would not be recognised by virtually all the freediving community (including AIDA - the largest international body). The accepted world record is held by Martin Stepanek on Czechoslovakia at 8mins06s." commented Steve Gardner, Chairman of the British Freediving Association.
