Divers in champagne frenzy
Divers from Folkestone Diving Club have discovered the wreck of French cargo ship The Seine, and have started lifting some of the estimated 20,000 half bottles of champagne from the wreck.
The bottles of champagne have been lying in the hold of the wreck since the ship sank in 1955. The contents of one of the bottles has been tested and pronounced drinkable by champagne expert Susan Barrie, though she commented that most of the fizz had gone, and that aged champagne is something of an acquired taste.
The Seine is reported to have sunk mid-Channel, but the divers are not releasing the marks until they have finished recovering as much of the champagne as they care to lift. The Receiver of Wreck has been informed.
