Divers find new wrecks galore off Plymouth
Two weeks of dedicated exploration diving organised by Deep Blue Diving of Plymouth has yielded
many new wreck discoveries and given exploration opportunities to divers purely on the basis of ability.
Finding and identifying a previously unknown wreck is one of the greatest thrills possible for many divers.
Unfortunately the world of exploration diving tends to be dominated by self-selecting dive teams, leaving many capable
divers with little opportunity to take part.
Deep Blue Diving in Plymouth have created the first wreck-finding project which is open to all divers,
based purely on ability to carry out the dive. "Anyone capable of diving 65-80m on mixed gas and
willing to take the chance on diving an unexplored site is welcome to take part," explained Deep Blue's Richie Stevenson.
The thrill of finding a completely new wreck has to be balanced against the possibility of finding yourself at 70m
diving on a pile of rocks, but prior research into the plethora of unknown marks in the area by Loyal Watcher
skipper Steve Wright has produced a high success rate.
"We've already found several new wrecks which now need to be identified, and there are plenty more out there" said Stevenson.
The two-week-long project has proved so popular with technical divers that Deep Blue are already planning
to run the event again next year.
A full report of the new wreck finds will be available from Divernet at the end of the project.
