5-year-old black labrador Princess was rescued by a diver after becoming trapped on a riverside ledge beneath an overhang in Brooklyn, New York.

The distressed family pet had become stranded onto a rocky ledge next to a fast flowing section of Quinebaug River. The dog's owners were unable to reach her without the considerable danger of falling in and being swept under.

The local emergency services were called to the scene, but reaching the dog was proving problematic. Then Mike Giguerre, one of the rescue workers who is also a diver, volunteered to kit up in his scuba equipment and be lowered into the river on a rope from the overhang above the trapped pet.

The diver managed to reach the rocks and grab Princess before being hauled, fully kitted, back to the top of the river bank. A crowd had gathered to watch the rescue take place. "You don't normally expect to see someone returning from a dive carrying a large black dog" remarked a Quinebaug Valley firefighter at the scene.
