Fort William Underwater Centre reopens for divers
The Underwater Centre at Fort William, north-west Scotland, has been rescued from receivership and
training for divers restarted by new owners The Crannog Concept.
With the loss of Bovisand, Fort William Underwater Centre had been the
last significant commercial diving training centre in the UK,
and there were fears that the diving industry would lose vital skills.
Fortunately, the buy-out by new company has managed to save the jobs of experienced diving instructors
and many others at the centre. A programme of refurbishment is now underway to bring the centre up
to scratch.
Training for commercial divers has been restarted, with courses such as
Professional scuba diving
Inshore and offshore air diving
Mixed gas saturation diving
Diver Medic
Recreational divers can also take part in a 'suck it and see'
session in full commercial kit for a fee of £75 - this fee is refundable if you take up a course.
In time, the company plan to restart a full programme of recreational diver training, making use of their
unique indoor glass tank and sheltered location for open water dives.
A spokesperson explained that a lot of commercial diving recruits come from recreational diving, and they are
keen to maintain the relationship with sport divers.
So what makes the Crannog Concept believe that they can succeed where Stenmar, the previous owners, failed?
"The previous owners got involved in a lot of investments that lost money,
and basically over-traded. We won't be making that mistake. There is a lot of demand
for high quality diver training; this is the core business and we will be concentrating on
maintaining excellent standards," marketing manager Steve Ham told Divernet.
