German divers honour British war dead
A team of German divers have placed a plaque on the wreck of WW1 British submarine E16 honouring the lost crew.
Divers from the Explorer Diving team discovered and identified the wreck in July 2001, lying in 36m in the Denmark straits.
This year Andreas peters and his team revisited the wreck to place a memorial plaque honouring the 31 crew who were lost on the submarine. E16 went missing in August 1916, whereabouts unknown, and appears to have struck a mine. A sister submarine, the E10, lies close by.
The plaque placed by the team reads:
This plaque has been placed here by www.explorerdiving.com
in Memory of those who lost their lives in this submarine HMS E16 during the Great War
'They have no grave but the sea'
Laid down in June 2003
The team obtained the consent of the Royal Navy before undertaking their expedition.
