Divers uncover new section of Henry VIII's Mary Rose
Marine archaeologists working in the Solent have uncovered a lost section of the Mary Rose, believed to be the ship's bowcastle.
An estimated three quarters of the wreck of the Tudor warship Mary Rose, was raised in 1982. However, the bow and stern are missing and divers excavating the site were aware that a number of timbers remained on the seabed.
The current round of excavation has been prompted by Ministry of Defence plans to dredge deeper channels into Portsmouth naval base to allow large aircraft carriers to enter. Some of the planned work crosses the Mary Rose wreck site, so divers were deployed to remove any artefacts from possible harm.
The latest discovery, described by John Lippiet of the Mary Rose Trust as 'highly significant' consists of a 5-metre-long timber that formed the front stem of the ship's keel. This supported the fortified bowcastle that contained cannon, and was also used by on board archers.
One of the complicating aspects of identifying the wreck's features is that no drawing of the ship was made at the time; the earliest images were drawn in 1547, 2 years after she sank, so may be inaccurate.
