Divers rescue stranded Minke whale
Cornish divers and marine life experts combined forces to free a 5-metre-long minke whale which was stuck on rocks close to Longrock in Mounts Bay, Penzance.
The whale was spotted on Friday 23 May and local divers, British Divers Marine Life Rescue, the RSPCA and wildlife handlers from the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek quickly formed a team to free the stricken animal.
The volunteers created a makeshift raft to support the whale and protect her from the rocks as she was towed into deeper water. The initial attempt ended in failure as the confused minke swam back onto the rocks, but after 4 hours of effort, the whale was successfully heading out to sea.
