Swedish dive team discover rare WW1 Russian submarine
Swedish divers have identified the wreck of lost WW1 Russian submarine AG-14, which went missing in July 1917.
The Swedish divers, led by Karl Douglas, reported their find to the Swedish military who sent experts to confirm the identity of the submarine. The Russian Defence Ministry have been contacted about the find.
The submarine was discovered close to the remote island of Gotska Sandoen in the Baltic Sea, off the south-east coast of Sweden. It was reported lost on 6 July 1917, with all 30 crew. The disappearance was assumed at the time to be down to a collision with a mine and she was presumed lost close to the German-occupied port of Libau while targetting shipping.
AG-14 was a brand new submarine, less than 30m in length, and the third in as many months to be lost by the Russian Navy in unexplained circumstances during the summer of 1917.
