Divers on alert over suspected torpedo at Scapa Flow
Shetland Coastguard have created an exclusion zone near Cava island to deal with a suspected torpedo dredged up in Scapa Flow by a fishing vessel.
A Navy bomb disposal team are en route to the Orkneys after an unexploded torpedo was found close to the much-dived wrecks of the WW1 German fleet at Scapa Flow; one of the busiest dive sites in the UK.
The alarm was raised and the suspect ordnance was removed to a position east of the uninhabited Cava island. A one mile exclusion zone for divers and a half mile exclusion zone for boats has been announced, with the coastguard broadcasting warnings to all vessels in the area.
Scapa Flow is a favourite destination for UK wreck divers. It served an important military base in both world wars, resulting in many ship and submarine wrecks.
Divers finding ammunition, shells or any other suspect objects underwater are asked to note the position, but leave the object in place and report it to the coastguard.
