British diver killed by speedboat at Redang
23-year-old Joanna Stillwell was snorkelling with turtles at the marine reserve at the island of Redang, Malaysia when she was hit and killed by a speedboat.
Her body was recovered into the boat while her brother, who was snorkelling with her, swam ashore to summon help and alert their parents. The family were on a three week holiday and were staying at a nearby hotel.
Redang is a popular dive site, famous for small sharks and turtles. Stillwell is described as an advanced diver, having learned to dive at Sheffield University; she had travelled and dived extensively in Australia and the Far East.
Malaysian police are investigating the incident and may consider prosecuting the driver of the boat, a local 23-year-old man.
The death comes at a time when investigations into the death of singer Kirsty MacColl - killed by a speedboat off Cozumel, Mexico in 2000 after surfacing from a dive are being re-opened by the Mexican authorities. The move comes after a sustained campaign by family and friends, who believe that several people at the original enquiry lied to the authorities about who was driving the boat at the time of the incident. The vessel involved is owned by one of Mexico’s
richest men, and he was on board with his family when the accident happened. A deckhand was later convicted of culpable homicide and allowed to pay a fine of approximately £60 in lieu of a 2 year, 10 month jail sentence.
A documentary about the incident, titled Justice for Kirsty is being shown at the Edinburgh International Television Festival in August.
