Crew of U-297 commemorated by divers and relatives
The nephew of the U-297's captain joined divers in Orkney on Sunday 18 May to place a plaque and personal items on the wreck of the u-boat in memory of the 50 men lost when she was sunk by a Sunderland flying boat in Dec 1944.
U-297 is a Type VIIC/41 submarine, the wreck was discovered 3 years ago by Ian Trumpess and Kevin Heath in 87m, 16 miles off Hoy Sound. Both divers were involved in organising the ceremony, and video footage of the submarine was filmed as part of the memorial event.
Thomas Bergmeier, nephew of U-297's captain, came over from Germany to pay his respects on behalf of the relatives of the lost crew and was taken out to the wreck site.
Nobody escaped when the submarine was sunk, and for over 50 years it was mistakenly believed that the U-297 had been lost off Cape Wrath after HMS Lochinsh and HMS Goodall reported having destroyed a submarine that had just torpedoed HMS Bullen.
