SHE'S BIGGER THAN THE TITANIC! |
HERE ARE THE FIRST close-up pictures of the biggest merchant shipwreck in the world - the Britannic (pictured above in 1916). Lying 120m down in the Aegean Sea, she is even bigger than her sister ship, the Titanic. These shots were not taken by a remotely-controlled camera vehicle. They are hands-on pictures taken by a British-led technical mixed gas diving team at the end of last year. Those who have dived the great liner, spiralling down the shotline with diver propulsion vehicles (needed for the vast wreck to be fully explored) will never forget her. Kevin Gurr, one of the first divers on the wreck, tells his story to Kendall McDonald.-Project Leader Kevin Gurr
"Those dives seemed to last no more than a few minutes," says Kevin. "Then either the rule of thirds on our 11/60 trimix (11 per cent oxygen, 60 per cent helium) or the end of our planned bottom time forced us to leave."
